All Clear for Turks and Caicos

first_imgOne thing we ought remember, is that although the tropical storm warning was discontinued for the TCI since 2pm, the DDME still has to do its checks to ensure that conditions are indeed safe, hence the all clear coming two hours later.    A Tropical Storm warning at 2pm today was discontinued for the Turks and Caicos Islands by the Bahamas Department of Meteorology.  Two hours earlier, at noon, the airports were reopened by the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority.  That was approximately the time that tropical storm force winds were predicted to dissipate, and they did.  Nearly all of Florida is under some kind of watch or warning and keeping to its peculiarity, Hurricane Matthew is, in at least two forecast models, expected to move up the south east coast, then make a turn or perhaps I should say a U-turn in the Atlantic and hit Miami.    If the storm does this, it will be much weaker forecasts are saying.    Currently, Hurricane Matthew is moving through The Bahamas chain of islands, expected to slam right into New Providence and Grand Bahama.  Those islands are as ready as can be and will experience Matthew by tonight.  Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, TCI, October 5, 2016 – Minutes to 4pm (Wednesday October 5, 2016) the ALL CLEAR was given for The Turks and Caicos and life as usual in these islands are officially resumed.  If you were looking for an epic encounter with dangerous, killer Hurricane Matthew then you are disappointed.  More sensible heads are grateful though for an uneventful encounter with the storm which has killed and destroyed and proven hard to chart, hard to read and uncommonly far reaching; nearly every country in the Atlantic & Caribbean had some brush with now Category three, Hurricane Matthew.   No damages were reported for the Turks and Caicos and the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies kept its command center and storm shelters opened from Monday into today.  Again, Turks and Caicos is no longer under Tropical Storm Warning and the ALL CLEAR is issued by the Turks and Caicos Islands Government.    Related Items:all clear given for tci, tropical storm warning discontinued for turks and caicos Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApplast_img read more

USPS Reports Further Losses in Q3 2016

first_imgAnother quarter, another grim earnings statement from the Postal Service. As of now, savings afforded to publishers by the removal of the exigency surcharge have not translated to an increase in shipping. While overall volume remained stable, the periodicals class dipped 3.8 percent decline in the number of pieces shipped, to 1.43 billion, mirroring recent quarterly declines. Despite “encouraging numbers,” postmaster general Megan J. Brennan cautioned that the agency’s fiscal situation remains bleak. Regardless, renewed calls for a financial life preserver, perhaps in the form of a new surcharge or rate hike, will surely draw the attention of the publishing industry. The USPS argues that it needs around $12 billion in relief in order to return to solvency. Given the scope of the agency’s losses — $5.1 billion last year, and $5.5 billion the year before — those figures are difficult to dispute. Operating revenue saw another slight increase, to $16.64 billion (up 0.7 percent over last year), but the bump wasn’t nearly enough to offset a 12.4 percent increase in operating expenses and the termination of the exigency surcharge — a 4.3 percent premium which had applied to all classes of mail before expiring in April. The loss of the surcharge is expected to hurt USPS revenues by nearly $2 billion each year, according to the agency. “Net losses continue to mount,” Brennan said in a prepared statement. “Our results in the quarter further underscore the need for legislative reform that provides the organization with greater financial stability.” It’s the 41st consecutive quarter in which less periodicals were shipped than in the corresponding period the year before, and overall volume in the periodicals class has fallen 37.8 percent from a quarterly high of 2.3 billion in the third quarter of 2006. USPS chief finanical officer Joseph Corbett blamed lackluster revenue growth in the face of mounting losses on the termination of the exigency surcharge, which he termed a “mandated price reduction” in a statement. The Postal Service itself estimates that it lost $450 million during the quarter as a result of the surcharge’s expiration, still not nearly enough to approach profitability. “They have to understand that it’s a different age,” Cregan told Folio: in April, at the time the exigency surcharge was rolled back. “They’re not the only game in town anymore, and they have to improve their customer relations and understand that we — that is, the MPA — are their customers.” The agency posted a net loss of $1.57 billion for the third quarter of its fiscal year (April 1 to June 30), more than double the $586 million loss recorded over the same period in 2015. But representatives for the publishing industry, like the MPA’s EVP of government affairs, James Cregan, argue that the Postal Service needs to retain its clients more than it needs legislative assistance.last_img read more

How Collaboration And A Little Magic Made Blood Oranges Negro Swan

first_img Email Dev Hynes reveals how he was able to creatively weave his personal stories with so many distinct voices on his new projectAna YglesiasGRAMMYs Sep 6, 2018 – 11:11 am The musician and producer Dev Hynes, best-known for his indie electro R&B project, Blood Orange, released Negro Swan on Aug. 24, his fourth LP under that moniker. Not unlike his music career, the album brings together an unexpected group of collaborators which together showcase Hynes’ creative vision and unique voice in an organic way.The third single from the album, “Saint” highlights Hynes’ masterful collaboration skills. The song features the voices of four other artists, including the indie-rock band Porches, all of which were recorded in different studios at different times. The music video, like many of his, including for “Jewelry,” was directed by the multi-talented (yet impossible to label) artist himself. Thanks to circumstances even Hynes himself may never know, with perhaps an almost magic text message, Hynes was able to get a dream collaboration on “Hope.” The track fits its title, with the one and only Puff Daddy offering hopeful spoken-word messages throughout the song.”What is it going to take for me not to be afraid to be loved the way, like, I really wanna be loved?…You give me that hope that maybe one day I’ll get over my fears and I’ll receive,” Puff says on the track. In an interview with Pitchfork, Hynes shares how the collab came together rather serendipitously. “While working on that song, I started doing fake Puff vocals, because I thought it sounded like that to me. And then I was like, ‘It’d be kind of cool if it actually was Puff.’ So I sent him a text, like, ‘I did this track, do you want to do this vocal part?’ And he replied, ‘Send it.’ He sent back his vocals, like, 20 hours later,” he shared, almost in awe himself of how it came together. The second single from the album, “Jewelry,” feels like an organic stream of consciousness with distinct parts, a distillation of the album’s themes and perhaps the artist’s life experiences as a whole. Hynes’ said that his label had been on him to get album art, but he had a gut feeling that the right image to represent the album would come from the shoot, and indeed it did. He wanted to work with Kai the Black Angel in the video, and a stunning image of him from the video shoot, wearing angel wings through the streets of New York, became the Negro Swan cover art.Clearly the artist knows when to trust his intuition and let the art flow naturally. If more evidence of this was needed, one could point to him featuring writer/director/activist Janet Mock as the narrator on the album, offering her insights on the albums themes across many of the tracks. Her voice and perspective offers a deeper cohesion to album, yet Hynes shares that her words were taken from a conversation they had one day in his studio when their paths crossed in New York; he shared his Negro Swan inspiration notebook with her and recorded her thoughts on it.While Negro Swan has recently created a lot of buzz around Hynes, and for good reason, he is no stranger to the music industry, having spent a lot of time behind-the-scenes writing and producing for a wide range of artists across genres, including GRAMMY winners Kylie Minogue, Solange, Basement Jaxx, and Chemical Brothers on “All Rights Reserved” from their GRAMMY-winning We Are The Night. There must be more than a little magic and a whole lot of creative vision behind what he makes feel almost effortlessly natural.Read more How Collaboration Made Blood Orange’s ‘Negro Swan’ how-collaboration-and-little-magic-made-blood-oranges-negro-swan Facebook Twitter How Collaboration And A Little Magic Made Blood Orange’s ‘Negro Swan’ News last_img read more

Hyundai developed airbags that can handle multiple collisions

first_imgEnlarge ImageGiven how long airbags have been around, it’s a little surprising it took someone until 2019 to figure out a multiple-collision solution. Hyundai According to Hyundai, three out of every 10 collisions involve secondary collisions with other objects. So Hyundai developed an airbag system that hopes to protect you beyond the first hit.Hyundai announced on Monday that it has developed and intends to commercialize a multi-collision airbag system, which the automaker claims is the first of its kind. In essence, it acts like a normal airbag, inflating to prevent injuries during a collision, but it’s unique in the sense that some airbags will deploy upon a second collision, as well. The tech depends on detecting movement of the occupants during and following the first collision. It can change the deployment strength of different airbags based on a person’s position, attempting to mitigate any potential injuries incurred in secondary crashes. “By improving airbag performance in multi-collision scenarios, we expect to significantly improve the safety of our drivers and passengers,” said Taesoo Chi, head of Hyundai Motor Group’s Chassis Technology Center, in a statement. “We will continue our research on more diverse crash situations as part of our commitment to producing even safer vehicles that protect occupants and prevent injuries.”According to Hyundai’s research, cars crossing the center line create the greatest opportunity for multi-stage collisions, followed by sudden stops at toll gates and sideswiping. The automaker didn’t say when this tech would reach production, only that it would eventually end up in both Hyundai and Kia vehicles, since the tech is too potentially important to relegate to a single half of Hyundai Motor Group. 2020 Hyundai Palisade SUV is big in Korea, and everywhere else 72 Photos Hyundai Kia Hyundai Tags Preview • 2020 Hyundai Palisade: Croc eyes, family-friendly SUV heart Comment 2020 BMW M340i review: A dash of M makes everything better More From Roadshowcenter_img 1 Share your voice Review • 2020 Hyundai Palisade review: Posh enough to make Genesis jealous News • 2020 Hyundai Palisade, Widebody Chargers and more: Roadshow’s week in review Auto Tech Future Cars 2020 Hyundai Palisade review: Posh enough to make Genesis jealous 2020 Kia Telluride review: Kia’s new SUV has big style and bigger value More about 2020 Hyundai Palisadelast_img read more

Chairmans fishery blocks flow of Ichhamati

first_imgFish farming using bamboo and net fencing continues unabated in a four-kilometer area of the Ichhamati river in Nawabganj, Dhaka. Local residents suffer. The photo was taken recently. Hasan RajaA local chairman has been fish farming on the Ichhamati river in Shikaripara union of Nawabganj in Dhaka, hampering the river’s natural flow. This has caused local residents a lot of suffering.Chairman of Shikaripara union Alimor Rahman Khan erected a bamboo fence around a four-kilometre area on the Ichhamati river about five years ago and started fish farming. As a result, residents cannot freely use the river for bathing, fishing, or travelling. The life of aquatic animals is also in danger and river traffic cannot move.Residents say they have complained to the district administration.Under the authority of mobile courts, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has had the fence removed a number of times, but the chairman and his associates put up a new fence and start fish farming again. The residents allege this fish cultivation has been going on for the last five years. Around 600 fishermen from seven villages used to fish in the river. Now the chairman’s henchmen do not allow them to fish. They also prevent villagers from bathing in the river. When, The chairman’s men snatch away stray ducks from the river that belong to local residents. There are also allegations of local residents being beaten up and  residents on both banks of the river are leading troubled lives. There is a large bridge over the Ichhamati river in front of a bazar in Shikaripara union of Nawabganj. Under the bridge, bamboo and net fencing form clusters of fisheries. Such operations can be found in other sections of the river including Mahespur, Garibpur, and Hagradi bazar.During a recent visit, this correspondent, on Sunday, found a  bamboo and net fence stretching some 300 metres wide on the river near the Kashiakhali dyke.Local residents say such fences are there at about eight different places on the river.Speaking to Prothom Alo, a number of fishermen, including Amar Haldar, a fisherman from Daudpur, and Maron Barmon from Ananda Nagar, said they were not allowed to fish in the river for five years. Earlier, fishing on the river was their livelihood.Ali Hossain, Shikaripara bazar trader says there was a time when they travelled by launch on the river. Now, not even a boat can move on it. Because of a dyke built at Dasher Kandi, where the river originates, sand builds up in the area.Speaking to Prothom Alo, Awami League president of Shikaripara union, Mozammel Hoque, said the chairman is grabbing the river and water bodies of the locality using a “pocket” committee.According to chairman Alimor Khan at his home, the river flow is falling due to an embankment at Kashiakhali and water dries out during the lean season. Following these circumstances, the Directorate of Fisheries launched a project in 2017 to cultivate fish by dredging seven kilometers of the river. He said a 104-member committee comprising of fishermen, freedom fighters and their beneficiaries, are running the project. Alimor, who heads the committee, said Tk 1M is invested in the fish farming enterprise and the profits are distributed to the aforementioned beneficiaries.Asked whether it is fair to cultivate fish by obstructing the river, Alimore said, “The directorate of fisheries is not concerned about the flow of the river. The organisation focuses on fish production in the country.”About the allegations of local residents, chairman Alimor Khan said, “We do not torture anybody. Out of jealousy, some people spread false propaganda’.When contacted about the project, Iqbal Azim, deputy director of fisheries, , in charge of Dhaka division, said a project of dredging rivers and ponds across the country to cultivate fish was indeed undertaken.by. He also said the local administration leased out the water bodies to various beneficiaries. The department of fisheries provides the scientific and technical support, said Iqbqal Azim, adding that they provided technical assistance for the fish farming project on the Ichhamati river. He said the local administration attends to matters like grabbing, , and any hardships of local people.Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Nawabganj-Dohar, AKM Al Amin, said he would investigate the allegations and take action.Prothom Alo Nawabganj Corresondent cooperated to file this report. * This report, originally published in Prothom Alo print edition, has been rewritten in English by Rabiul Islam.last_img read more

UN vows sanctions over N Korea missile test

Photo: AFPThe UN Security Council has strongly condemned North Korea’s latest ballistic missile test and vowed strong measures, including sanctions, to derail Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme.North Korea’s long-term bid to develop a credible nuclear attack threat to the US mainland saw it launch Sunday what appeared to be its longest-range missile yet.Pyongyang said the new weapon—called the Hwasong-12 — was capable of carrying a “heavy nuclear warhead”.In a unanimous statement backed by the North’s main ally China, the council on Monday vowed to punish Pyongyang’s “highly destabilizing behavior” and demanded a halt to any further nuclear or missile tests.Pyongyang carried out two atomic tests last year, and has accelerated its missile launch programme, despite tough UN sanctions aimed at denying leader Kim Jong-Un the hard currency needed to fund his weapons ambitions.“There’s a lot of sanctions left that we can start to do, whether it’s with oil, whether it’s with energy, whether it’s with their maritime ships, exports,” US Ambassador Nikki Haley told ABC television’s “This Week”.“We can do a lot of different things that we haven’t done yet. So our options are there.”The United States is in talks with China—Pyongyang’s main trading partner—on a possible new sanctions resolution and the Security Council is expected to hold a closed-door emergency meeting starting around 2000 GMT Tuesday.‘A substantial advance’Kim personally oversaw Sunday’s test, the official Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said, and pictures by state media showed him gazing at the missile in a hangar before the launch. The missile was launched on an unusually high trajectory, before splashing down in the Sea of Japan (East Sea).Analysts said the test suggested an actual range of 4,500 kilometres (2,800 miles) or more if flown for maximum distance.“This is the longest-range missile North Korea has ever tested,” Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in the US told AFP.On the respected 38 North website, aerospace engineering specialist John Schilling said it appeared to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile that could “reliably strike the US base at Guam” in the Pacific, 3,400 kilometres away.“More importantly,” he added, it “may represent a substantial advance to developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)”.The North has made no secret of its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States—something President Donald Trump has vowed “won’t happen”.KCNA cited Kim as saying the North would never succumb to what it called the “highly ridiculous” US strategy of “militarily browbeating only weak countries and nations which have no nukes”.“If the US dares opt for a military provocation against the DPRK, we are ready to counter it,” it said.‘Reckless provocation’In April Pyongyang put dozens of missiles on show at a giant military parade through the capital, including one that appeared to be the type launched on Sunday. There are doubts whether the North can miniaturise a nuclear weapon sufficiently to fit it onto a missile nose cone, and no proof it has mastered the re-entry technology needed to ensure it survives returning into Earth’s atmosphere.Sunday’s test came less than a week after South Korea elected a new president, Moon Jae-In, who advocates reconciliation with Pyongyang and had expressed a willingness to visit the North to ease tensions. But Moon slammed the latest launch as a “reckless provocation” and said dialogue would be possible “only if the North changes its attitude”.Russian President Vladimir Putin said the test was dangerous, but warned against attempts to “intimidate” Pyongyang.Pyongyang could find itself the target of further global censure after security researchers reported Monday signs of a potential North Korean link to cyberattacks that have wreaked havoc on computer networks around the world. In the first clues of the origin of the massive ransomware attacks, Google researcher Neel Mehta posted computer code that showed similarities between the “WannaCry” malware and a vast hacking effort widely attributed to Pyongyang.Other experts quickly jumped on this as sign—although not conclusive—that North Korea may have been behind the outbreak.last_img read more

Flu Season Is Shaping Up To Be A Nasty One CDC Says

first_img Share Gregory Bull/APFlu patient Donnie Cardenas, right, waits in an emergency room hallway with roommate Torrey Jewett at the Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, Calif., on Jan. 10.The United States appears to be in the midst of an unusually severe flu season, officials at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday. The flu season started early, which is never a good sign, and the flu is already widespread throughout the country, the CDC’s latest report shows. Half of states are reporting especially intense flu activity.“We are currently in the midst of a very active flu season with much of the nation experiencing widespread and intense activity,” CDC Director Brenda Fitzgerald told reporters during a briefing.Based on the latest available data, the United States could be experiencing one of the most severe flu seasons in years, possibly similar to the severe 2014-2015 flu season, officials say.“Flu is everywhere in the U.S. right now. There’s lots of flu in lots of places,” says Dan Jernigan, director of CDC’s influenza division.CDCActivity levels are based on the percent of outpatient visits in a state due to influenza-like illness (ILI) and are compared with the average percent of ILI visits that occur during weeks with little or no influenza virus circulation.Officials cautioned, however, that the flu is very unpredictable. So there’s a chance the season could slow down quickly or end early, making it a more normal flu season. But the most recent data show that the proportion of people rushing to their doctors to get treated for the flu has already hit 5.8 percent, which is as high as that number gets during the peak of a really bad flu season, the CDC says.In addition, the rate at which Americans are being hospitalized for the flu almost doubled in the last week, to 22.7 for every 100,000 hospitalizations, according to the CDC.Those are two of the key ways the CDC monitors the severity of a flu season. So far, 20 children have died from the flu, compared with a total of 101 last season.During the 2014-2015 flu season, 40 million Americans got the flu, 19 million people went to the doctor to get treated for the flu, and 970,000 people were hospitalized.Officials, cautioned, however, that the hospitalization rate for the flu so far this year is slightly below the 2014-2015 rate. The main reason the flu appears to be so severe is that it’s a strain known as H3N2. That strain tends to make more people sick, and the people who get the flu tend to get sicker. It’s especially dangerous for children and the elderly.“When H3N2 is prominent, we tend to have a season with far more hospitalizations and deaths,” Fitzgerald says.To make matters worse, the vaccine may only be about 30 percent effective against that strain. That is better than the 10 percent effectiveness reported in Australia, which has its flu season before the United States does and often predicts what will happen in this country.Nevertheless, health officials are urging people to get vaccinated. Any protection is better than none. And the vaccine may end up being more effective, especially if other strains of the flu become more common. The vaccine is more effective against those other strains. The vaccine can also lessen the severity of illness in people who get sick. The flu season may be peaking in this country, but it could continue for many more weeks. So even though it takes two weeks for the vaccine to start protecting people after they get vaccinated, it’s still worthwhile to get vaccinated, they say.“While our flu vaccine is far from perfect, it is still the best defense we have,” Fitzgerald says.Officials are also encouraging doctors to treat some flu patients with antiviral drugs quickly, including children, the elderly, people who get severely ill and those suffering from other health problems. While there are spot shortages of antiviral drugs, the overall supply is plentiful.Copyright 2018 NPR. To see more, visit http://www.npr.org/.last_img read more

IQIYI CEO Gong Yu Says Artificial Intelligence Will Reshape Showbiz

first_img Popular on Variety He said that the traditional entertainment and online entertainment businesses would continue to merge in the future. He cited as an example the fact that more than 80% of tickets for movie theaters in China are now bought online. He said that the oligopoly in China’s online video market – where three players control around 80% of the market – would likely continue. It was unlikely to fragment, he said, due to the high cost of entry. But it would not consolidate further either “because producers and advertisers won’t favor a market that only has one dominant player.”He said that the entertainment business in China is set to grow from $154 billion in 2016 to an estimated $403 billion in 2022, and that the share taken by online video would grow from 15% to 25%, according to iResearch forecasts. He asserted that iQIYI was “well-positioned to capture the huge entertainment market” in China. This was due, he said, to its leading position in the market; its “advanced business model” that allowed it to “capture market opportunities”; an in-depth understanding of Chinese entertainment; its “top-notch original production capability”; and “disciplined and efficient investment in content.”He said that one of the company’s strengths was its “diversified monetization model,” which he referred to as “Netflix plus.” As well as subscription and advertising, the revenue sources include publishing, content distribution, IP licensing, online gaming, e-commerce, and talent agencies. Gong Yu, founder and CEO of China’s leading streaming platform iQIYI, said at Mipcom content market on Tuesday that artificial intelligence “will reshape the entertainment industry over the next 10-15 years, much more so than the internet did over the past three decades.” There was a shift underway from the “internet era” to the “A.I. era,” he asserted. In the former, users browse and search for content from the company’s library of content; in the latter, creators and platforms provide “tailor-made content” and “intelligent recommendations” to the users. Among the uses of A.I. technology in entertainment would be “Intelligent Creation,” such as the deployment of A.I. in casting, script evaluation, and traffic and box-office predictions. But it would also be utilized in other areas, such as customer service, monetization, distribution, and content production, such as keyword and thumbnail generation.center_img ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Studying the mountains and starquakes that develop on neutron stars

first_img Star crust 10 billion times stronger than steel, physicists find Explore further Citation: Studying the ‘mountains’ and ‘starquakes’ that develop on neutron stars (2009, May 26) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2009-05-mountains-starquakes-neutron-stars.html (PhysOrg.com) — Neutron stars have the potential to play an important role in understanding some of the mysteries of the universe. One of factors that could help lead to an understanding of gravitational waves and the mechanisms involved in giant flares in magnetars is the strength of the crust that forms on the outside of a neutron star. In an effort to better understand the neutron star crusts, Charles Horowitz, at Indiana University in Bloomington, and his colleague Kai Kadau, at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, have used molecular dynamics to model neutron stars and come up with improved estimates of the breaking strain.center_img “In 2004, a giant flare was detected coming from a magnetar. It had a huge amount of energy.” Horowitz tells PhysOrg.com. (A magnetar is a neutron star with a very powerful magnetic field.) “We think that this mechanism only makes sense if the crust is really, really strong. Such a large flare should only be possible if, by the time the crust broke, there was tremendous energy stored in the crust and magnetic field.” Horowitz hopes that the simulations run with Kadau will help shed more light on the workings of neutron stars, and even perhaps answer other questions about the universe. Their work is presented in Physical Review Letters: “Breaking Strain of Neutron Star Crust and Gravitational Waves.” Horowitz says that for many years, scientists have been studying neutron stars and the “mountains” that develop on them. The bulges that create gravitational waves are the results of temperature-dependent nuclear reactions near hot spots. “People have wondered how big they can get, how massive they could become before the crust breaks because of forces from the strong magnetic field,” he explains. It is this collapse that releases the flares that are sometimes detected. There are two main aims for studying the possibilities for the crust of a neutron star: Learning more about these stars – what the crust is made of and how they might function – and using neutron stars as a way to possibly detect gravitational waves. Horowitz and Kadau’s model might be able to help in both of these areas, since it offers a more detailed look at what goes on when a mountain is formed – and when it collapses, causing a “starquake.” In the first case, the simulation Horowitz and Kadau is working with shows that the crust is likely made up of ions. “It’s more or less composed of normal atoms,” Horowitz explains, “but they’ve been ionized. The huge pressure of the star squeezes the electrons in such a way as to create ions. We think that the material is slightly heavier than iron, possibly selenium.” Understanding neutron star mechanisms, however, may also help scientists find gravitational waves. “The mountains that form on these rapidly rotating neutron stars generate gravitational waves quite efficiently. If we understand how this works, we might be able to make better predictions of which neutron stars would be most likely to produce the strongest gravitational waves. It would give scientists a better place to look.” Horowitz explains that gravitational waves are curves in space-time, predicted by Einstein’s theory of general relativity. “To actually find these waves would be a major discovery and a confirmation of general relativity. And I think our model can help in that aim.” More information: C.J. Horowitz, Kai Kadau. “Breaking Strain of Neutron Star Crust and Gravitational Waves,” Physical Review Letters (2009).
