first_img VIPs Pack Chamber Event at Palm Cay to Mix, Mingle & Meet Carnival Chiefs Recommended for you Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppBahamas (Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation) – Arnold W. Donald, who heads the $3.6 billion Carnival Corporation, will headline the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers’ Confederation annual mix and mingle for business leaders, movers and shakers at an event being called The Wind Down: Where Business + Leisure Meet October 2.The networking reception focusing on what creates sustainable success is expected to draw a waiting list of attendees. It will be held at the Billfish Grill at Palm Cay, the 350-home mixed residential and marina community that has been a success story in its own right, winning, among other accolades, the first Bahamas Contractors Association award presented to a development rather than a contractor. “Bringing together a man who is larger than life in the diverse operation that is Carnival Corporation with its 10 cruise ships brands and 91,000 employees with local leaders in the business community in a venue at a beachside setting that shows the best of The Bahamas is one that we hope will once again reinforce how important the business sector is to the well-being of the nation,” said Edison Sumner, Chamber CEO.Long recognized as the voice of business in The Bahamas, the Chamber has in the past few years touched more people at every level than ever before. Its Chamber Institute with monthly practical seminars and workshops, its thoughtful statements on pending legislation and its active development in promoting sectors of the economy linking domestic providers and suppliers with potential foreign buyers and investors has skyrocketed the 100-plus year old institution’s position to new heights. The presence of Mr. Arnold could elevate its reputation even more.According to Mr. Sumner, the event, being billed as a once in now-time opportunity, is expected to be a sell-out.“Because we want a certain amount of intimacy and personal contact, we have limited the numbers and with the invitations just going out today, the response has been immediate,” he said. “I’m not sure what we are going to have to do to top this next year, but maybe we will ask the American Embassy, which assisted with this year’s main guest of honour, to see if they can bring the president or head of a winning basketball team. We are very appreciative to the Embassy and our sponsors for their support.”Mr. Sumner’s reference to basketball was likely in connection with Mr. Arnold’s predecessor Micky Arison, owner of the Miami Heat and until July of last year, president of Carnival, the company his father founded and which he grew and ran with success until he turned over the post of top executive in July 2013. Mr. Arison remains chairman. And the company continues to thrive, reporting more than $1 billion in profit in the last fiscal year under Mr. Arnold’s reign.Sponsors include American Embassy, Bahamas First, BTC, Callenders & Co. Counsel & Attorneys, John Bull Group of Companies, NUA and Palm Cay Marina & Beach Club. Google will pay Fossil 40 million for smartwatch tech

first_imgSome members of a Fossil R&D team are also joining Google as part of the deal.  César Salza / CNET Google is buying secret smartwatch technology from Fossil for $40 million. Design company Fossil said Thursday some members of the research and development team supporting that intellectual property will join Google as well. “We’ve built and advanced a technology that has the potential to improve upon our existing platform of smartwatches,” said Greg McKelvey, executive vice president and chief strategy and digital officer at Fossil, in a press release (PDF). “Together with Google, our innovation partner, we’ll continue to unlock growth in wearables.” The deal is expected to close later this month. Google declined to share further information about Fossil’s smartwatch technology that it’s buying.  In 2015, Fossil acquired Misfit, a wearable-tech startup focused on fitness trackers, for $260 million. The deal married Fossil’s fashion and watchmaking skills with Misfit’s technology. But Fossil appears to be getting out of that market. Fossil and Google have put out a few smartwatches. The fashion company’s latest, Fossil Sport, was a Google Wear OS smartwatch released in November. The watch had Qualcomm’s newest 3100 wearable chip to make its battery life longer. Last year, Google and its partners like Fossil put the emphasis more on fitness when they designed their smartwatches. The devices’ fitness-tracking feature, Google Fit, was revamped with new Move Minutes and Heart Point goals. Turo: Save $30 on any car rental $210 at Best Buy $999 $60 at Best Buy Sarah Tew/CNET Tags I thought this might be a mistake, but, no, the weirdly named HP Laptop 15t Value is indeed quite the value at this price. Specs include an Intel Core i7 processor, 12GB of RAM, a 256GB solid-state drive and a 15.6-inch display. However, I strongly recommend paying an extra $50 to upgrade that display to FHD (1,920×1,080), because you’re not likely to be happy with the native 1,366×768 resolution. DJI Osmo Action camera: $261 (save $89) Google,I’m shocked — shocked! — to learn that stores are turning Labor Day into an excuse to sell stuff. Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. Google Express is having a big sale as well, one that includes deals on game consoles, AirPods, iPhones, laptops and more.Below I’ve rounded up a handful of individual items I consider to be the cream of the crop, followed by a handy reference guide to other Labor Day sales. Keep in mind, of course, that products may sell out at any time, even if the sale itself is still running. Note that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of the products featured on this page. last_img read more

Is Google trying to topple Trumps 2020 reelection campaign

first_imgProject VeritasSearch giant Google has been accused of allegedly planning to interfere in Donald Trump’s US President re-election campaign after a top company executive’s claim of preventing “the next Trump situation” was released in a video. The video made by conservative group Project Veritas shows the Head of Responsible Innovation of Google, Jen Gennai, explaining its technology and appearing to suggest that the company is planning in advance of changing “outcomes” through “training algorithms”.”We’re also training our algorithms, like, if 2016 happened again, would we have, would the outcome be different?,” Gennai said. She also claims that the firm has the “resources” to stop future election interference. The Project Veritas’ report accuses Google of collecting classified training data, programming algorithms in such a manner that media is filtered, ranked, aggregated and guaranteed. It accuses the firm and said, “people like us are programmed.”Gennai called the video “absolute, unadulterated nonsense” in a Medium post and claimed the video was edited to suggest that Google was working to stopping Trump’s 2020 election. She explained that representatives from a company claiming to be from “2 Step tech Solutions” had invited her to discuss a mentoring program for young people of colour in the technology field in May.While explaining how Google’s Trust and Safety team is working towards the prevention of foreign interference in the upcoming US elections, she wrote that “a series of debunked conspiracy theories about our search results, and our other products” was “stitched together” in the video. The report also said that a source from Google told them that the tech giant uses Machine Learning Fairness that influences how political stories are aggregated. It accuses the firm of “liberal bias” even when the stories are “factually correct.” The report said, “it may be desirable to consider how we might help society reach a more fair and equitable state, via either product intervention or broader corporate social responsibility efforts.”YouTube removed the video from the Project Veritas official account on Wednesday on third-party privacy claims. The video is available on its official website.Project VeritasFormed by Conservative political activist James Edward O’Keefe III, Project Veritas is a US non-profit organisation that is “dedicated to investigating corruption, dishonesty, waste and fraud in both public and private institutions”.However, he has been criticised for selectively editing videos to misrepresent responses and create a false impression of what his sources claim to reveal about controversial issues.last_img read more

UN vows sanctions over N Korea missile test

first_imgPeople gather at a street-side newsstand showing a copy of the Rodong Sinmun newspaper featuring coverage of a May 14 North Korean rocket test, in Pyongyang. Photo: AFPThe UN Security Council has strongly condemned North Korea’s latest ballistic missile test and vowed strong measures, including sanctions, to derail Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme.North Korea’s long-term bid to develop a credible nuclear attack threat to the US mainland saw it launch Sunday what appeared to be its longest-range missile yet.Pyongyang said the new weapon—called the Hwasong-12 — was capable of carrying a “heavy nuclear warhead”.In a unanimous statement backed by the North’s main ally China, the council on Monday vowed to punish Pyongyang’s “highly destabilizing behavior” and demanded a halt to any further nuclear or missile tests.Pyongyang carried out two atomic tests last year, and has accelerated its missile launch programme, despite tough UN sanctions aimed at denying leader Kim Jong-Un the hard currency needed to fund his weapons ambitions.“There’s a lot of sanctions left that we can start to do, whether it’s with oil, whether it’s with energy, whether it’s with their maritime ships, exports,” US Ambassador Nikki Haley told ABC television’s “This Week”.“We can do a lot of different things that we haven’t done yet. So our options are there.”The United States is in talks with China—Pyongyang’s main trading partner—on a possible new sanctions resolution and the Security Council is expected to hold a closed-door emergency meeting starting around 2000 GMT Tuesday.‘A substantial advance’Kim personally oversaw Sunday’s test, the official Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said, and pictures by state media showed him gazing at the missile in a hangar before the launch. The missile was launched on an unusually high trajectory, before splashing down in the Sea of Japan (East Sea).Analysts said the test suggested an actual range of 4,500 kilometres (2,800 miles) or more if flown for maximum distance.“This is the longest-range missile North Korea has ever tested,” Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in the US told AFP.On the respected 38 North website, aerospace engineering specialist John Schilling said it appeared to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile that could “reliably strike the US base at Guam” in the Pacific, 3,400 kilometres away.“More importantly,” he added, it “may represent a substantial advance to developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)”.The North has made no secret of its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States—something President Donald Trump has vowed “won’t happen”.KCNA cited Kim as saying the North would never succumb to what it called the “highly ridiculous” US strategy of “militarily browbeating only weak countries and nations which have no nukes”.“If the US dares opt for a military provocation against the DPRK, we are ready to counter it,” it said.‘Reckless provocation’In April Pyongyang put dozens of missiles on show at a giant military parade through the capital, including one that appeared to be the type launched on Sunday. There are doubts whether the North can miniaturise a nuclear weapon sufficiently to fit it onto a missile nose cone, and no proof it has mastered the re-entry technology needed to ensure it survives returning into Earth’s atmosphere.Sunday’s test came less than a week after South Korea elected a new president, Moon Jae-In, who advocates reconciliation with Pyongyang and had expressed a willingness to visit the North to ease tensions. But Moon slammed the latest launch as a “reckless provocation” and said dialogue would be possible “only if the North changes its attitude”.Russian President Vladimir Putin said the test was dangerous, but warned against attempts to “intimidate” Pyongyang.Pyongyang could find itself the target of further global censure after security researchers reported Monday signs of a potential North Korean link to cyberattacks that have wreaked havoc on computer networks around the world. In the first clues of the origin of the massive ransomware attacks, Google researcher Neel Mehta posted computer code that showed similarities between the “WannaCry” malware and a vast hacking effort widely attributed to Pyongyang.Other experts quickly jumped on this as sign—although not conclusive—that North Korea may have been behind the outbreak.last_img read more
