The Washington-based Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS) has inducted another Caribbean American entertainer into its “Wall of Fame.” Along with the award to actress Cicely Tyson, Jamaican American actress Sheryl Lee Ralph was induced in commemoration of National Caribbean American Heritage Month celebrations in June.Ralph was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, the daughter of Ivy Ralph, a Jamaican fashion designer, and Stanley Ralph, a college professor. Cheryl Ralph who was raised in Mandeville, Jamaica, and Long Island, New York, attended Uniondale High School in Uniondale, New York where she starred in a high-school production of the musical Oklahoma!, portraying Ado Annie. She graduated in 1972. Youngest graduate of Rutgers UniversityAt 19, Ralph was the youngest woman to ever graduate from Rutgers University in New Jersey, ICS said. During her time at Rutgers, Ralph was one of the earliest winners of the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships awarded by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. She was also was named one of the top 10 college women in America by Glamour magazine. Initially, she hoped to study medicine; but, after dealing with cadavers in a pre-med class and winning a scholarship in a competition at the American College Theater Festival, she gave up medicine for the performing arts. Years later, she served as the commencement speaker at Rutgers for the Class of 2003.Nominated Best ActressRalph began her career on the stage, and was nominated in 1982 for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Deena Jones in ‘Dreamgirls’. In 1984, Ralph released her only album, “In the Evening,” in which the title track peaked at #6 on the Billboard Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart that same year, in 1988, she went on to star in the Disney movie Oliver & Company, providing the voice of the character named Rita.Starred in move with DenzilHer first leading role in a film came as Denzel Washington’s wife in The Mighty Quinn, released in 1989. In an article published on March 3 in the UK’s Express news outlet, experts noted that prostate cancer is most common in men of Afro-Caribbean and African descent. Dr. Michele Reed, a US-based family medicine specialist, was reported earlier this year stating that black men of Caribbean descent have been shown to have a higher rate of incidence of prostate cancer than their African-American counterparts. According to Professor Mark Emberton of the Princess Grace Hospital, one in four black men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. “It is not known why this happens,” he says, “but we believe there is a genetic link.”Other reports indicate that in the disease is twice as common among Afro-Caribbean men, specifically, than it is among white men. Signs of Prostate CancerIf you are a man of Afro-Caribbean descent, it’s important you know the signs of prostate cancer to ensure early detection. The color of urine has been highlighted as an easily recognizable symptom of prostate cancer. Pink, red, brownish red or tea-colored are all indicators of blood in the urine, which is a sign of prostate cancer. Other warning signs of prostate cancer include frequent urination, the sudden need to urinate, difficulty in urinating, extended or long urination, weak flow of urination, feeling unable to fully empty one’s bladder, and blood in semen. If the cancer has spread beyond the prostate, men will experience symptoms such as pain in the back, hip or pelvis. Erectile dysfunction also becomes evident when the cancer has spread, as well as blood in the urine or semen, and unexplained weight loss. Risk of Prostate CancerProstate cancer diagnosis is most frequent in men between the ages of 65 and over. In rare instances, younger men also develop the disease. Men whose brothers or fathers have had the disease are more likely to be diagnosed, and those who are overweight or obese are at higher risk of being diagnosed with an advanced, or more aggressive, stage of the cancer. Prostate cancer has been linked to a diet high in calcium.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – At a press conference today, Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness announced that all travelers from countries where there is local transmission of Covid-19 will now be required to self-quarantine for up to 14 days.This measure, done to protect residents, will negatively affect visitors that already planned to visit the island for short trips, less than 14 days. Such travelers are being asked, if they can, to cancel or postpone their flight until the restriction is lifted.The government confirmed that there were now 12 cases of Covid-19 on the island. As the ministries work to contain the virus, several measures have been put in place to restrict mass gatherings.The government has restricted the opening of bars, nightclubs and other entertainment establishments. There should be no gathering of over 20 persons in any public space and there is a limitation on the number of attendees at funerals and weddings.As of the 18th of March, all non-essential work in the public and private sectors should be done from home. Holness said that it is not the intention of the government to shut down the economy, but to institute measures to ensure enforcement of social distancing.
