Afro-Caribbean men deemed most at risk for prostate cancer

first_imgIn an article published on March 3 in the UK’s Express news outlet, experts noted that prostate cancer is most common in men of Afro-Caribbean and African descent. Dr. Michele Reed, a US-based family medicine specialist, was reported earlier this year stating that black men of Caribbean descent have been shown to have a higher rate of incidence of prostate cancer than their African-American counterparts. According to Professor Mark Emberton of the Princess Grace Hospital, one in four black men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. “It is not known why this happens,” he says, “but we believe there is a genetic link.”Other reports indicate that in the disease is twice as common among Afro-Caribbean men, specifically, than it is among white men. Signs of Prostate CancerIf you are a man of Afro-Caribbean descent, it’s important you know the signs of prostate cancer to ensure early detection. The color of urine has been highlighted as an easily recognizable symptom of prostate cancer. Pink, red, brownish red or tea-colored are all indicators of blood in the urine, which is a sign of prostate cancer. Other warning signs of prostate cancer include frequent urination, the sudden need to urinate, difficulty in urinating, extended or long urination, weak flow of urination, feeling unable to fully empty one’s bladder, and blood in semen. If the cancer has spread beyond the prostate, men will experience symptoms such as pain in the back, hip or pelvis. Erectile dysfunction also becomes evident when the cancer has spread, as well as blood in the urine or semen, and unexplained weight loss. Risk of Prostate CancerProstate cancer diagnosis is most frequent in men between the ages of 65 and over. In rare instances, younger men also develop the disease. Men whose brothers or fathers have had the disease are more likely to be diagnosed, and those who are overweight or obese are at higher risk of being diagnosed with an advanced, or more aggressive, stage of the cancer. Prostate cancer has been linked to a diet high in calcium.last_img read more

Catchpoint – Bookmakers ‘slow off the mark’ for 2017 Grand National

first_img Related Articles Share Analysis by Catchpoint has suggested that major UK online bookmakers ‘failed to deliver on web performance and digital experience’ at this year’s Grand National. The digital performance intelligence firm monitored the performance of top UK betting sites including bet365, Sky Bet, Ladbrokes and Paddy Power in the run-up to and on the day of the big race.Gamebookers trailed the field, with pages taking eight seconds to load, which is longer than the standard for online retail home pages at 3 to 4 seconds. Paddy Power came in at six seconds. Before the race, which was won by One For Arthur, the average time most bookies took to load a full page so that people can start placing bets exceeded four seconds. This can be explained by the presence of large volumes of data and applications that take too long to load.Robert Castley,Robert Castley, Senior ePrformance Engineer at Catchpoint, said: “Online betting websites usually have complex technical platforms that include in-house and third-party software to serve the highly dynamic websites especially at time-sensitive events like horse races.“The Grand National is perhaps one of the most popular events for betting and is an example of where gaming sites must cope with extraordinary surges of traffic. So, keeping your site up and running and performing well on the high-stakes race day is at the heart of whether your online betting business flourishes.“Unfortunately, on Saturday UK betting sites did not maintain a good standard and most pages took considerably longer to load than is acceptable in our digital consumer economy. Whether this frustrated someone placing the winning bet may never be known, but we hope the industry learns from this year and runs a faster digital Grand National next year.”Catchpoint’s tips for maintaining site performance include reviewing how third-party apps like social media plug-ins or multimedia can impact digital experience while applying image and HTML compression to make websites smaller and thus run faster. The company also said it’s important that mobile sites test and control APIs, and that CDN/hosting providers can handle expected traffic and protect a business from distributed denial of service attacks. Successful soft launch for BetterBetting’s World Cup app

first_img StumbleUpon Submit Kindred ups operating costs to accommodate for licensed realities July 24, 2019 Suren Khachatryan, Digitain: Focusing development on the customer’s need for speed April 23, 2019 Share Share BETR launches multi-cryptocurrency betting February 22, 2019 Related Articles BetterBetting is two weeks into a soft launch period for its World Cup app, produced in record time after the introduction of the BETR token to coincide with the tournament’s kick off on 14 June. The unique blockchain-based decentralised peer-to-peer sports betting system provides a mechanism for two parties to bet with one another on the blockchain with secure contracts.Ethereum contracts are key to the system, as they escrow funds from both parties and hold them until settlement. All bets are placed and settled using the BETR token, released in an initial token offering, that is currently trading and available for purchase on major exchanges such as HitBTC, Bancor, IDEX, Etherdelta, Bisq and Waves.BetterBetting CEO Adriaan Brink said: “The World Cup is a great event to test our first release. We have had a very positive response and look forward to increased usage over the coming weeks.”“The team has worked incredibly hard to produce this technology in the time scale we set post our successful ICO,” he added. “Further releases will feature improved user interfaces, functionality and user experience.“They will include main football leagues in time for the 2018/19 season, including the English Premier League, Spanish Primera Liga and the German Bundesliga. We intend to add sports in accordance with user feedback and demand so there may well be additional sports even before the European football season starts.”The company has deployed several products to facilitate this Blockchain betting. The first instance of a BetterBetting Node (BBN), which manages the dissemination of odds and provides APIs to power independent user apps, a BETR Wallet making it easy to store and use BETR tokens, and an Android App that uses the BBN APIs to expose a simple odds selection interface. The first BBN, which allows anyone to create an account and lay bets, was created specifically for the World Cup, but ultimately there will be many of these communicating with one another.Users can lay bets on all the World Cup games with an extensive set of markets to choose from. All markets are available with reference pricing derived in real time from bookmakers, while users can tweak their odds pricing above or below the market in order to offer bets with lower or higher margin.“This is the first release and was produced in record time after the ICO,” Brink concluded. “It is only the start and there are many iterations and improvements to come as the product is expanded and becomes more mainstream in functionality. We have a great team behind us and we are confident the success of this project will continue.”The app’s BETR wallet is a standard ether wallet that holds a bettor’s funds and exposes the API that provides signing and execution of Ethereum contract calls against the user’s account. This provides an in-app experience for any contract execution not limited to interactions with the BETR token. The odds apps have no access to wallet information or funds.last_img read more
