Olympics: Grenada’s Kirani James makes history

first_imgBy Dialogo August 07, 2012 LONDON – Kirani James became the first Grenadan to win Olympic gold when he won the 400-meter dash in a blistering 43.94 seconds, just a little slower than the world record of 43.18 seconds set by American Michael Johnson in 1999. “Michael’s been a huge thing for our sport and our event, and obviously everybody wants to reach that level at some point,” James told reporters. “But I’m just focused on trying to be the best I can be and don’t try to be like Michael. If I try to be like him, every time I fail it’s going to be a disappointment for me and a disappointment to everybody. I just try to be me.” James, 19, became the first non-American to win the event since 1980, and his victory set off a raucous celebration in the Caribbean nation as Grenada, with a population of 109,000, became the smallest nation ever to win Olympic gold. “The whole place is going crazy right now,” James said. “I can’t explain. I’m so excited.” Luguelín Santos of the Dominican Republic took the silver in 44.46 and Trinidad and Tobago’s Lalonde Gordon won the bronze in at 44.52. But even before the race, James already was a champion in the eyes of most fans for his actions after his semifinal heat on Aug. 5. The teenager didn’t take a victory lap or jump into the stands after finishing first. Instead, James went to South African runner Oscar Pistorius, a double amputee competing on carbon fiber prosthetic legs, and swapped bib numbers with him. Pistorius failed to post a good enough time to qualify for the final race, but the gesture by James demonstrated an incredible amount of respect for the ground-breaking double-amputee. “My hat’s off to him, just coming out here and competing,” James told reporters. “I just see him as another athlete, another competitor. What’s more important is I see him as another person. He’s someone I admire and respect.” And it’s not hard to see why James values the example set by Pistorius. James grew up in the fishing community of Gouyve where his father was a laborer. James didn’t get a way out until 2007 when a silver medal at the Youth World Championships earned him an athletic scholarship to the University of Alabama. “When you are young you don’t have anything to lose, but you have so much to gain,” James told reporters.last_img read more

Igali warns athletes against using performance-enhancing drugs

first_imgRelatedPosts Igali praises Team Nigeria’s performance in Rome tournament All African Games: Our plan is to win many medals – Igali Nigeria on course to winning an Olympic medal in wrestling – Igali Former Olympic athlete, Daniel Igali on Saturday in Yenagoa warned sports men and women in Bayelsa against using performance-enhancing drugs while participating in competitions. Igali, who is the state’s Commissioner for Sports Development, gave the warning while addressing the athletes, saying “using drugs to win in a game is not helpful in strengthening talent”. He expressed worry at the development and noted that the state government would not take it lightly with any athlete who resort to cheating to win medals in any tournament. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the commissioner, who is also the President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation had received the state’s weightlifters who just returned from a competition. They had participated in the National Open Weightlifting Championships in Jigawa, where they won six medals made up of three gold, one silver and two bronze. Igali commended the weightlifters for their outstanding achievement in spite of the constraints they experienced before their departure. He urged the athletes to always be passionate and dedicated, instead of waiting for monetary incentives before taking part in sports competitions. The commissioner pointed out that weightlifting offers an athlete the opportunity of winning more than one medal at national, continental and global championships. “I urge you to be up and doing. The state government is making arrangements to sponsor and support athletes to the forthcoming National Sports Festival in 2020 and we are hopeful that you will make us proud,” he said.Tags: athletesDaniel Igalilast_img read more

Rock Video Illustrates Nihilism of Evolution

first_imgSenseless sex.  Mass death.  Religious hypocrisy.  Moral equivalence.  Impersonality.  Irresponsibility.  Male aggression, abduction and murder.  Glorification of lust.  Book burning.  Assembly-line babies.  Dehumanization.  Terrorism.  Holocaust.  Armageddon.  It’s all illustrated with raw intensity in the Pearl Jam rock video, Do the Evolution, available on YouTube.com.1  Evolution wipes out humanity, without remorse, in just 3:53 minutes.  Watch it only if you dare.1Do the Evolution, from the Pearl Jam album Yield (1998).  Background information on the production is presented on Wikipedia, which also lists the lyrics.  The song got a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1998, and this particular video was nominated for a Grammy for Best Music Video; it is also on the Pearl Jam DVD, Touring Band 2000.  This year, the music video has been uploaded 82 times by subscribers on YouTube, and has been rated five stars and a favorite of all time by many of them.  Researchers may want to study the comments of young people who say “really cool” and “LOVE this vid” and express many of the same antisocial feelings.WARNING:  This video is filled with intense and disturbing images and screaming rock.  Not suitable for children and definitely jarring to anyone.  Its value is in shocking the remaining sensible and civil adults among us to the reality of what evolutionary nihilism is doing to our world (see 08/23/2006 entry).*    Entertainers (if that term fits here) can sometimes communicate things with an intensity beyond logic and facts.  The phantasmagoria of horror in this video is clearly shown to be mere acting out of the beast within us, from which we all emerged as bacteria long ago, according to the dominant “scientific” theory of human origins taught as fact in our schools without alternatives.  As a consequence of this world view, bombing millions of people is no different than a little girl stepping on an anthill.  There’s no responsibility, no moral consequences, no worries.  It all makes perfect nonsense when you do the evolution.    We’d like to see the Richard Dawkinses and E. O. Wilsons of this era comment on this video.  Let them try to disown it and explain to Pearl Jam fans around the world that this is not what gentle old Father Charlie intended when he unleashed his little bombshell book to the world.  Let them explain why this kind of world view is not a logical extension of evolutionary theory.  Any comments, Eugenie Scott?  Ken Miller?  Are you proud of this?  Where is the ADL now?  Where is NOW now?  All you Tolerance people, your silence is deafening.    Clergymen accustomed to speaking lovey-dovey platitudes to gently smiling seniors and soccer moms should be forced to watch this video before standing in their pulpits this weekend and facing the young people in the pews, who probably consider this number just ordinary fare from the grunge rock rage of the late 1990s, and pretty cool animation: “I’ll do what I want, but irresponsibly / It’s evolution, baby / I’m a thief / I’m a liar / That’s my church; I sing in the choir… I crawled the earth, but now I’m higher / Twenty-ten, watch it go to fire / It’s evolution, baby / It’s evolution, baby / Do the evolution / Come on, come on, come on!”  How about showing that in your church for Evolution Sunday, all you liberal pastors who signed allegiance to Charlie? (see 02/11/2006).  Invite Elie Wiesel to enjoy it with you (02/28/2006, 09/19/2005).    Pearl Jam, just one band of a whole genre of grunge rock, gets thousands of screaming admirers on its world tours with its brand of sermon preaching hate and meaninglessness.  If this does not send a man of God to his knees, nothing will. Some may relegate this kind of expression to normal youth rebelliousness and criticism of authority and hypocrisy, combined with shock value for publicity.  Some may think it was just a satire on evolution without really taking it seriously, or was actually a criticism of evolutionism.  That doesn’t seem to be the case from the Wikipedia analysis: “The video begins with the evolution of life, from the smallest cell to the extinction of dinosaurs and reign of homo sapiens,” it says matter-of factly; “The video evolves into depicting human beings in violent yet historically true scenes.”    In other words, any intended message against violence is swamped by the assumption that evolution shows the true history of the world as one of violence and extinction, one species devouring another, for millions of years.  What humans have done to each other, and might do, is all in character with evolution.  On what basis could or should they do anything else?  Do the evolution, indeed.    The album was apparently inspired by Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, an evolution-based novel with an overt Malthusian, anti-JudeoChristian message that has a cult following of its own.  It’s remarkable how much of this cult includes an obsessive hatred of Genesis.    The fans get the message, too.  Consider that the Columbine High School massacre (see Wikipedia) occurred only a few months after this album was released, and one of the young killers wore a T-shirt proclaiming “Natural Selection.”  The Wikipedia article includes a quote from their diary expressing nihilistic rage very similar to that in the Pearl Jam song – again, with NATURAL SELECTION, in all caps, the centerpiece. Wake up, people.  This is deadly serious.(Visited 17 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

first_imgRightScale and Zend Technologies launched a platform this morning for deploying and managing PHP applications. The RightScale Zend PHP “Solution Pack” combines the RightScale Cloud Management Platform with the Zend PHP architecture powered by Zend Server. The service is another example of how platforms are becoming the most suitable method for developing, porting and maintaining applications in the cloud.“Considering PHP’s ubiquity on the web, it wasn’t a question of if it embraced the cloud, but when,” said Stephen O’Grady, Principal Analyst with RedMonk. “With the recently announced RightScale/Zend partnership, the two companies are offering PHP users the best of both worlds, with the time to market of Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and the flexibility of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS).”The service includes the following:Pre-configured Zend PHP architecture to speed time to marketAutoscaling based on system and application load metrics, supported by load balancingPHP session clustering for high availabilityRedundant database with failover and recoverySystem, server and application-level monitoring, alerting and diagnosticsCloud portabilityWhat’s noteworthy about the news is the portability.A develoepr may use the service and port it to a cloud environment of their choosing. The service from RightScale and Zend is a powerful combination in a market that is just emerging from services such as Windows Azure, Echolibre’s Orchestra and phpfog. In terms of losing a game, it’s the worst way you can possibly do it.“After holding on for so long and then to concede in injury time is horrible.“But we are looking more like a typical Burnley team over recent weeks.“We got a good result and a clean sheet last week and again we got so close against a top side, so there were definitely positives from our point of view.” last_img read more

Turning a new corner OSU guard takes on new challenge

As if Evan Turner didn’t do enough already. In the game of basketball, guards typically handle the ball and pass, forwards shoot and score and centers rebound and block shots. So what position is Turner, who led Ohio State in points, rebounds, assists, 3-point percentage and steals a year ago?“He would be your hybrid point forward, whatever those announcers call those guys,” coach Thad Matta said. “He’s a guy that can do a lot of different things.”Technically speaking, Turner started all 33 games last season at shooting guard, with juniors Jeremie Simmons and P.J. Hill splitting the point guard duties. But the 6-foot-7 swingman handled the leather as much as any point guard would, as evidenced by his team-high 7.1 assists per game.As the Buckeyes turn the page on a new season, Matta will present Turner with a new role to add to his arsenal: the team’s true point guard.“I think I’m going to do a little bit of everything,” said Turner, a First Team All-Big Ten selection last year. “I’m going to start off at point guard, trying to orchestrate the team. I always prefer to have the ball in my hands and try to have control over the game.”While his all-around statistics impress, Turner’s passing ability caught Matta’s eye, triggering the idea to start the junior at the point.“One thing I’ve seen a lot of improvement in is Evan’s passing,” Matta said. “That’s something that we talked about in the offseason. From that standpoint, we’ve got to get him the ball in certain situations because he finds guys, and it’s advantageous for us where he is when he catches it. The defense has a lot of decisions to make. When we have guys around him that can shoot it, that’s good for us.”The switch means that Hill and Simmons will both come off the bench, a demotion they refuse to scoff at, knowing full well that the team excels best when Turner possesses the ball.“It benefits us a lot because Evan is such a great player that he can not only create for himself, but he can create for others,” Hill said. “That makes the game easy when a guy can drive. Everybody is all eyes on him, they help, we move into position, and he gets us the ball on time every time where we want it.“And even if they don’t help, then he scores. Good things happen when he has the ball. He’s a very special player.”Matta hopes that the move will enable Turner’s teammates to contribute more for a team that won 22 games and lost in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago. While defenses concentrate on Turner setting up the offense, forward David Lighty expects the rest of the players on the court to get less attention, and open shots as a result.“He creates for everyone out there on the floor,” said Lighty, who missed the majority of last season with a broken foot. “You have to double-team him because if you don’t, he’s going to hurt you. Whatever defenders have to do to stop him, it’s going to help us out because they have to read him.”He might not match his league-high 17.3 points per game average from last year, but Turner should find plenty of open teammates.“I score in other ways,” Turner said. “We have an equal balance of scoring, and it makes it even easier for everyone else on the team. If [his scoring] takes a hit, it takes a hit. We’re just trying to get some more wins in the win column.”In all, both coaches and players feel that placing Turner at the point puts him — and the team — in the best position to exceed the predicted preseason finish of third in the conference.“Coach Matta is helping me understand the system more and putting trust in me to carry out what needs to be done,” Turner said. “I think that I can make plays, and I have a lot of teammates who can make shots. Whichever way we go, we’ll try to be successful with it.” read more
