Atletico Through to Final on Away Goal

first_imgRobert Lewandowski’s header set up a tense finish, but Atletico held on after Fernando Torres missed a penalty.Bayern, backed by a vociferous home crowd, desperately pressed for a third goal that would send them through. However, they could not find a way past Oblak, who blocked David Alaba’s 20-yard volley in injury time.Atletico, aiming to be crowned European champions for the first time, will meet Manchester City or Real Madrid in the final on May 28 in Rome.City faces Atletico’s neighbours at the Santiago Bernabeu today after the teams drew 0-0 in last week’s first leg.Atletico has lost twice in the final of Europe’s leading club competition – to Bayern in the 1974 European Cup and against neighbours Real two years ago.Now Los Rojiblancos have another opportunity to lift the trophy, in Milan later this month. They produced another display of remarkable defiance against the German champions – playing in their fifth successive semi-final – at the Allianz Arena.Bayern had 33 attempts on goal and 72 per cent of possession – but it still was not enough to beat the gritty Spaniards. The hallmark of Atletico’s recent success has been their strength in defence, with Diego Simeone’s side developing a reputation as one of the toughest teams in Europe to break down. However, the quality of their clinical attack should not be overlooked.Atletico had not even managed a single touch in the Bayern penalty area until Griezmann fired in from the edge of the box.The France striker marginally beat the Bayern offside trap, latching on to Fernando Torres’ through ball before coolly drilling underneath Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram Atletico Madrid reached its second Champions League final in three years by edging past Bayern Munich on away goals in a pulsating semi-final. Powered by Firework Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi hailed Virat Kohli as a ‘great player’ and wished him success after the Indian captain broke quite a few records on Wednesday night. In the second T20I against South Africa at Mohali, Kohli scored an unbeaten 72 from 52 balls while chasing a decent target of 150 and he became the only batsman to have a batting average above 50 in all three formats of the game. He also has become the highest run-scorer in T20I cricket with 2441 runs from 71 matches.Advertisement And the former attacking batsman, Afridi acknowledged all his feats through Twitter, saying,Advertisement “Congratulations @imVkohli You are a great player indeed, wish you continued success, keep entertaining cricket fans all around the world.”Afridi previously had praised Kohli for his extraordinary batsmanship, picking him ahead of MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar in his all-time World Cup side.Coincidentally, Kohli who received the man of the match award for the 11th time is now tied with Afridi (11) on the second number in the all-time list after Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi (12).While receiving the accolade, Kohli confessed that he found motivation from the memorable innings against Australia in the 2016 T20 World Cup while he was walking out to bat in Mohali.Earlier, South Africa after being asked to bat first registered 149 in their innings with Quinton de Kock the top performer of his side with 52 from 37 deliveries. And Kohli, who loves to chase, organised his superb innings with four boundaries and three maximums as India won with an over to spare.  Advertisementlast_img read more
